Netbox: Efficient Infrastructure Documentation with Plugins

Network documentation is not a favorite task for many administrators, but it is essential: during outages, the relationships between devices, cables, and IP addresses must be immediately clear. Netbox has established itself as an open solution that combines Datacenter Infrastructure Management (DCIM) and IP Address Management (IPAM), offering a level of detail that conventional tools often lack.

What many users don’t know: Netbox can be extended with plugins to add additional features that make documentation even easier. For example, a visualization plugin can automatically generate a complete network diagram from the recorded data – as long as the cabling and devices are correctly documented. Another plugin generates QR codes for devices and cables, which, when scanned with a smartphone, lead directly to the corresponding Netbox entries. This makes on-site inventory a breeze. And of course, much more.

We will cover the setup of Netbox itself in another blog post. We’ll also discuss which plugins are recommended and how to implement various requirements with custom scripts.

In practice: the more precisely the data is captured, the more useful the plugins are. The labeling of devices and cables should not only be at the rack level, but also extend to individual ports and virtual instances. With the QR code plugin, labels can be printed that contain all relevant details – from the serial number to the IP address. This reduces documentation work to data entry, and the plugins handle the rest.

Additional extensions range from managing BGP connections to integrating virtual machines. The community provides a variety of plugins that are officially curated. Anyone who wants to efficiently document their network in the future should rely on Netbox and discover the appropriate plugins.
